Last we heard of Avatar 2 and its pair of subsequent sequels, director James Cameron had opted to delay the upcoming installments due to a complex script. This is largely due to the fact that all three movies are set to be filmed simultaneously, leaving cast and crew with a lot of plates to keep spinning. However, despite the events of the first Avatar in 2009, one seemingly core member of the original film set to rejoin production is Sigourney Weaver, who may not play Grace Augustine upon her return.
That’s according to the actress herself, who recently appeared on The Jonathan Ross show to talk all-things-Chappie (with a spice of Blomkamp’s mysterious Alien sequel thrown in for good measure, no doubt). And during the course of the interview, Weaver was asked how she will be able to return to the mystical world of Pandora. Put simply, the actress “won’t play the same character.”
But what does this mean for Grace Augustine? Was Sam Worthington’s Jake unable to save her life using the power of the Tree of Souls? Alas, we’ll have to wait patiently until we know for sure. Mind you, given that Avatar 2 exists in the genre of science fiction, there are numerous possible explantations for Weaver’s return to the fray. Here’s what James Cameron’s had to say on the matter a couple of years back.
Okay, here’s the deal. When you have a science-fiction series, a science-fiction franchise, you’re never dead, unless your DNA is expunged from the universe. And then there’s always time travel!
Following the recent postponement, Avatar 2 isn’t set to arrive in theaters until some point in 2017, and Weaver alludes to the sequel entering production in the fall of this year. Only then will we learn much more about the actress’ revised role.
