With Disney’s merger with 21st Century Fox now complete, Marvel Studios are no doubt starting to think about the best way to go about bringing the mutants and Fantastic Four into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, we imagine their top priority, at the moment, would be figuring out how to get Wolverine involved, as there’s been a whole lot of discussion online regarding what should be done with the iconic hero.
Sadly for fans of Hugh Jackman, we already know that the studio will be recasting the role, doing away with the two decades of character development seen in Fox’s X-Universe. Given that James Mangold’s Logan was the perfect swansong for Jackman’s Wolverine though, and that Hugh himself has stated on multiple occasions that he’s done with the part, this isn’t terribly surprising.
So, while it’s sure to upset fans that Jackman won’t be the one donning the adamantium claws the next time we see Wolvie, we might be able to take some consolation in the fact that the character will at least be entrusted to a capable pair of hands. Or at least, that’s what Avengers: Endgame co-director Anthony Russo has us thinking.
Speaking to Fandango in a recent interview, the filmmaker was asked which of the mutants him and his brother Joe would love to tackle and here’s what he had to say:
I mean, we’ve always been huge fans of Wolverine. We certainly haven’t been thinking about if and when and how we would ever go there, but just off the top of my head, that’s a character we’ve always been passionate about.
Now, this is far from confirmation that Joe and Anthony Russo will be directing a Wolverine movie for Marvel Studios, but you have to imagine that if the House of Ideas is indeed planning on another solo film for Logan, they probably would consider entrusting their most valuable directors with the project. Not to mention that a Russo Brothers-directed Wolvie movie is definitely something the fans would go crazy for.
But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, as it’ll likely be some time before we hear of what Marvel has planned for Wolverine. Still, if they are indeed looking to give him a standalone outing, we can’t think of anyone better to handle that than Joe and Anthony Russo.
