Avengers: Endgame Directors Tease More Of Chris Evans’ Cap To Come

Avengers: Endgame wrapped up Steve Rogers' journey across the MCU in as final a way as possible without killing him. It not only aged him up to an old man and married him off to Peggy Carter - in the past, no less - but also had him hand his shield and the mantle of Captain America over to Sam Wilson. Despite all that though, the Russo brothers seem to be teasing that there's more from Steve to come.

While speaking to Business Insider, the duo were asked to clarify the mechanics of Steve going back in time and staying in the past. Joe Russo explained that “he would have to come back to this timeline in order to hand off the shield.”

Following that, Anthony dropped an intriguing hint that teased that there’s more to explore, saying: “There’s a question of, how did this separate timeline Cap come to reappear in this timeline and why?”

The interviewer then asked if this was a story for another day, which led to Joe laughing and replying with: “Correct.”

These comments will get anyone already missing Chris Evans’ Cap excited, but it has to be said that the Russos have repeatedly flip-flopped on whether the star is done with the MCU or not. Before Endgame‘s release, the directors maintained Evans was still committed to the franchise. Then, after Endgame, they said that the actor had “emotionally moved on” from the role and was unlikely to return. Now, we have this quote that suggests there’s more of Steve’s story to tell.

The likelihood is that the Russos don’t actually have a concrete answer on where Evans’ relationship with Marvel stands after Avengers: Endgame. This would be up to the actor himself and presumably, he hasn’t made a definitive choice yet. This would explain why the Russos and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely keep sharing conflicting interpretations of the film’s final scene. But whatever the future might hold, at least we got a near perfect conclusion to Steve’s story in the Infinity War sequel.
