With the Disney-Fox merger having completed back in March, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four came home to Marvel Studios just in time for Avengers: Endgame. Of course, though fans were crossing their fingers, none of these characters showed up for a sneaky last-minute cameo in the movie. However, this hasn’t stopped folks from theorizing that the events of the game-changing end to the Infinity Saga could explain how mutants are introduced into the MCU.
The idea goes that the Snap – or Snaps, plural, as Thanos, Hulk and Iron Man have all used the Infinity Stones over Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame – could have caused some kind of global change that results in the awakening of mutantkind. But what do writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely think about this notion? Could the fans be onto something here?
Well, not as far as they know. The Hollywood Reporter put the question to the scribes and, while they admitted that “anything’s possible,” they don’t think that’s what’s going to happen. Markus personally thinks it’s more likely mutants are already out there, just unnoticed.
“Anything is possible, but I don’t [know] whether you’d need that. Genetic mutation is genetic mutation. It just happens. Maybe they are already out there.”
McFeely then elaborated by pointing out that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige most likely has something very clever up his sleeve for how he’ll fold the X-Men into the MCU and fans won’t see it coming.
“I do think that whenever Kevin decides to do X-Men or Fantastic Four, it won’t be how you think it’s going to happen. I think he’s going to have a real clever version of it.”
The denial of this theory might’ve stumped us, if Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s recent trailer didn’t tease another way the X-Men could appear, that is. If Mysterio’s to be believed, the Snap ruptured reality enough to break down the barriers between the different Earths of the multiverse. Having the X-Men coming from another world then might be the simplest way of explaining where they’ve been all this time.
