Though the marquee Marvel movie may fall just short of that $2 billion when all is said and done, Infinity War is reportedly sizing up a huge opening in China, having already notched a record $50M in presales.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, revealing that the MCU juggernaut has recorded around $47.5 million (RMB 302 million) in presales as of late Wednesday night in Beijing, which is almost twice that of the previous Hollywood record-holder: The Fate of the Furious, after the petrolhead sequel revved up an estimated $25 million (RMB 158 million) early last year.

It’s undoubtedly a massive primer for what many believe to be the film’s last hurrah at the global box office, but the question remains: will Avengers: Infinity War best Age of Ultron‘s $240 million haul in the Middle Kingdom when it opens on May 11th. Box office analysts certainly think so, and given the film’s near-unprecedented momentum, we’re inclined to believe them.

Perhaps the most important factor in all of this is that Avengers: Infinity War will enjoy a free week at the Chinese box office, with the only notable competition arriving in the form of Paramount sleeper hit, A Quiet Place.

It isn’t expected to slither into Chinese theaters until the following week, mind you, and let’s face it: it would take something truly special to detract from Avengers: Infinity War, which is shaping up to be one of the most successful films of all time. And considering the sheer amount of expectations that preceded it, that’s a staggering feat in and of itself.
