For those who had as much trouble as Darcy pronouncing the word ‘Mjolnir,’ it probably came as a relief to learn that Thor’s replacement weapon in Avengers: Infinity War had a name as recognizable as ‘Stormbreaker.’ But going by this newly shared concept art, the recent Marvel megahit could’ve climaxed with the God of Thunder driving an axe called Jarnbjorn into Thanos’ chest.
In the array of illustrations that have surfaced online recently, we’ve seen how not only were alternate outfits considered for characters, but also alternate scenarios. In this particular image, however, it’s evident that the Thor and Rocket pairing is still very much a thing, and we can also be pretty certain that a trip to Nidavellir was already planned for the pair at this stage in development because of the weapon that Chris Hemsworth’s character is visibly wielding. The prop in question is Jarnbjorn, which features in the comics as an item forged in the home world of the dwarves. And since this proved to be the in-film origin of Stormbreaker, it stands to reason that Jarnbjorn would’ve played much the same role in the story.
This is far from only case we’ve seen in the last week of a hero being styled a little differently in the early concept art, of course. We’ve also observed array of designs for Peter Parker and Bucky Barnes, as well a couple of more rugged variations on Steve Rogers’ Nomad-esque look in the movie.
Many of these images will be available in the new Avengers: Infinity War artbook Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie, which comes out on November 6th. But if you’d rather see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in live action form, Avengers 4 will be hitting theaters on May 3rd, 2019.
