Even before Avengers: Infinity War‘s arrival late last month, it was almost a foregone conclusion that the Marvel epic would crush box office records all over the globe.
And sure enough, after three weeks (and change) of absolute dominance, Infinity War‘s total cume has reached a staggering $1.81 billion worldwide, placing it ahead of Jurassic World ($1.672 billion) and now within striking distance of the almighty $2 billion. That’s thanks to the film pulling in another $28.7 million on home turf and $84.4 million overseas this weekend.
While unadjusted for inflation, Infinity War‘s $1.81 billion figure means Marvel’s Herculean blockbuster is now officially the biggest ever summer movie, as the only three films to gross higher than $2 billion (see: Avatar, Titanic and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) opened in and around the festive period, and therefore benefited from a break in school term.
That being said, Joe and Anthony Russo’s event film was finally knocked from the top of the box office perch this weekend by none other than Wade Wilson. Yes, the Merc with a Mouth stole the crown from Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as Deadpool 2 scooped up $125 million stateside, which makes for a grand total of $301.3 million when combined with its international haul.
But take nothing away from Avengers: Infinity War, for it’s had a tremendously successful theatrical run and things are far from over. After all, the film will continue pulling in respectable numbers for weeks to come, while its home video release is also on the horizon. August 14th is the date that’s being rumored for that – with Digital on July 31st – and already, various retailers are starting to reveal their exclusives.
Circling back to those box office numbers, though, and as Avengers: Infinity War continues its journey to $2 billion, we’ll be sure to keep you posted every step of the way.
