Together they’ve rebooted The Winter Soldier, waged a Civil War, and orchestrated the superhero double act that is Infinity War and the so-far untitled Avengers 4, but it seems Joe and Anthony Russo aren’t quite finished with Marvel Studios. Not yet, at least.
As things stand, the Russo Brothers have their crosshairs firmly trained on the back-to-back launch of Avengers: Infinity War and its unnamed sequel – for the record, the former is due to screen in its entirety later this evening, so be wary of spoilers – though during a sit-down interview with Screen Rant, the filmmaking duo touched base on the possibility of a future collaboration with Marvel Studios beyond 2019.
That’s exciting in and of itself, given the pair’s immaculate track record, but the thought of the Russo Brothers being placed in control of an Avengers Vs. X-Men movie is enough to leave us weak at the knees – even if the Disney-Fox merger is still pending some final negotiations before everything is signed, sealed and delivered.
Whatever the case, here’s what Joe Russo had to say about the possibility of circling back to the MCU once Avengers 4 has had its time in the sun:
Not yet. We love Marvel, that amazing experience with them and Disney. We love comic books. We love telling these stories. Obviously, the Fox-Disney merger is incredibly exciting to us as comic book fans. We’re just trying to get Avengers 4 done and then, you know, we’d love to work with those guys again.
They’ve already gone on record about their love for Wolverine, while the Disney-Fox merger will also spell the moment when Deadpool and the Fantastic Four are drafted into the MCU. Given the current timeline, though, it’s unlikely we’ll see the fruits of that deal until 2021 at the earliest.
Besides, there’s an Infinity War on the horizon, and it’ll begin screening worldwide on Friday, April 27th.
