Remember Team Cap and Team Iron Man?
Back in 2016, those two super-groups clashed in spectacular fashion, and it seems the fallout from Marvel’s Civil War still casts a big, big shadow over the MCU. Take the epic first teaser trailer for Avengers: Infinity War as an example.
Long before Thanos and the Black Order touched down on Earth, yesterday’s preview began with a somber callback to the Avengers Initiative, Nick Fury’s wildly ambitious masterplan that involved bringing together a group of remarkable people. It’s the one faint signal of hope amid all of the apocalyptic action, as the footage cuts to a bearded Captain America (Nomad, perhaps?) who quite literally steps out of the shadows.
On the other side of the planet, a visibly distressed Tony Stark is seen in the company of Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), and Benedict Wong (Wong), but the eagle-eyed folks over at MCU News & Tweets seemed to have uncovered a really rather awesome Easter egg, proving that, yes, Stark and Steve are still in contact despite last year’s colossal dust-up.
Via Twitter, the outlet posted a screenshot from Infinity War‘s inaugural teaser, which shows Robert Downey Jr.’s tech genius clutching onto a flip-phone. Could it be that this same phone is the one given to him at the end of Captain America: Civil War? It’s certainly possible, as it would allow the two on-screen heroes to set aside their differences in a way that is not only plausible, but also in keeping with the MCU’s continuity.

It’s another layer of intrigue to add to the multi-faceted Avengers: Infinity War, which will jump-start Marvel’s “deadliest showdown” on May 4th, 2018. The battle against Thanos will then, of course, spill over into 2019, given that Avengers 4 is also cramming up the pipeline.
