In all of box office history, few releases have the necessary staying power to break $100 million during their second weekend. But it seems Avengers: Infinity War is one such film.
Deadline has crunched the numbers to reveal that not only has Infinity War crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, but the Marvel event movie also scooped up $112.5 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office (which means its home turf total now stands at $450.8 million). That’s huge.
Put it this way: Warner’s Justice League couldn’t even muster $100M in its opening weekend, let alone the second. And though it did come in a bit under what analysts predicted, Infinity War still earned “the second-best second weekend ever behind Force Awakens ($149.2M) and ahead of Black Panther ($111.6M).”
Internationally, meanwhile, the film impressed as well, raking in a whopping $162.6 million (to bring its overseas figure to $713.3 million). For those keeping track, that means that this weekend’s haul now puts Infinity War‘s global total at a staggering $1.16 billion. And with the way things are going at the moment, the pic looks like it could break $2 billion when all is said and done, becoming only the fourth film to do so after Avatar, Titanic and The Force Awakens.
Of course, those kind of numbers also mean that Infinity War snagged a few more records. It set a new opening weekend record in Russia with $17.6 million and became the highest grossing release ever in Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines, while earning the title of second highest grossing release in India (western) and Mexico. Not to mention, it’s also now overtaken the lifetime grosses of Captain America: Civil War ($1.153B), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085B) and The Dark Knight ($1.004B).
As we said above, the next stop is obviously $2 billion, and while it’s still quite a ways away, it’s important to remember that Avengers: Infinity War has yet to open in China, where pre-sales are through the roof. With that in mind, we imagine the Middle Kingdom will give the pic a pretty big boost and with any luck, it might just join Avatar, Titanic, and The Force Awakens in that oh so exclusive club.
