From a storytelling perspective, Avengers: Infinity War and all of its CG-laden spectacle can be whittled down to the Mad Titan’s quest to find and acquire all six Infinity Stones.
Each cosmic shard represents a figment of our universe, given the Time Stone grants the ability to manipulate spacetime while the overpowered Reality Stone allows its wielder to bend and mold the reality around them – like turning an obsidian dagger into a flurry of bubbles, for instance.
But if there’s one Infinity Stone that continues to spark heated debate online, it’s the Soul Stone. Amid the radio silence, curious fans have dreamed up all sorts of weird and bizarre theories, with one even going so far as to suggest that Tony Stark and the Soul gem are, in fact, one and the same. Frankly, that’s bogus.
Without straying too far into spoiler territory, let’s just say that Avengers: Infinity War identifies the stone’s whereabouts, and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely believe that it’s this gem that helps throw a spanner in the works, so to speak.
Via Cinema Blend, here’s what the writing duo had to say about the Soul Stone and its importance to the Infinity War story. And don’t worry, no spoilers here…
Markus: The Soul Stone was very helpful to us story-wise. When you see the movie you’ll see why. We were always worried about Thanos just checking off his shopping list. Right? If I know where everything is, it’s pretty predictable.
McFeely: Also, if he knew where everything is, why is he doing it now? Why didn’t he do it during Avengers, if he knew where everything was?
Markus: That’s a nice question that we answered.
