Now that D23 is over for another year, and the industry is quietly beginning to brace itself for the onslaught of news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con this coming weekend, moviegoers now have a small window of time to reflect on Disney and Marvel’s respective showcases, not to mention catch up on everything they may have missed.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Avengers: Infinity War were undoubtedly the two biggest names on the call sheet, and while those in attendance at D23 were treated to a sneak peek at the latter, Disney blew the lid off The Last Jedi with a poignant behind-the-scenes montage and a series of beautiful, blood-red posters featuring some of the sequel’s prominent players – namely Leia Organa, Rey, Luke Skywalker, and John Boyega’s turncoat, Finn.
Perhaps wary of showing too much, too soon, film fans have been left to pick over scraps of information pertaining to Avengers: Infinity War, including a behind-the-scenes picture of Spider-Man and details on Hulk’s major arc in Joe and Anthony Russo’s ensemble movie. And though Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner will be appearing alongside Doctor Strange in November’s Thor: Ragnarok, Infinity War co-director Joe Russo took time to highlight the “great chemistry” between Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme and our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
While appearing on Good Morning America (via Screen Rant), the filmmaker fielded all sorts of questions relating to Avengers: Infinity War, before confirming that, yes, the Iron Spider armor will indeed have a role to play in the 2018 blockbuster. The jury’s still out on how much screen time will be allotted to that famous guise, but reports tell us that Spidey’s role will be comparable to that of Civil War.
As for the dynamic duo – namely Cumberbatch and Holland, who will soon trade Infinity War for period drama The Current War – Joe Russo went on to discuss how the superhero neighbors riff off one another on the big screen.
There’s a really great chemistry there. I mean, they both have a proximity to each other, if that’s a hint that I can give? But anybody who’s a Marvel fan will know that they both reside within the same city, and I think that Tom and Benedict have a great chemistry, and we wanted to exploit that.
Avengers: Infinity War will be with us on May 4th, 2018, and it seems the first teaser is looming large on the horizon.
