David Fincher’s neo-noir chiller-thriller pits homicide detectives Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman against a diabolical serial killer who murders his victims in grisly fashions that mirror the seven deadly sins. Looking back, the bleak, rainy unnamed New York City-like setting is one of this movie’s most oppressive stylistic draws, along with a bevy of clever cinematography that helps to bring its gritty, grimy world to life.

The dark and disturbing tale is masterfully woven together with stark realism — the performances and chemistry between the whole cast glistens with understated brilliance. It’s impossible to watch this film without the final scene being permanently burned into your mind’s eye — it really is a splendidly crafted, gut-wrenching horror with some of the most harrowing cinematic imagery Fincher, and indeed Hollywood, has ever produced.
