Awards season hits its full stride now as the nominees for the Orange British Academy Film Awards have been announced, coming ahead just a week before the Oscar nominations announcement. And with no surprise to anyone, considering this is the BAFTA’s, The King’s Speech leads the way with a massive 14 nominations with Black Swan trailing with a very impressive 12.
What is always interesting about the BAFTA’s is there ability to find some welcome changes to some of the other awards ceremonies. Firstly unlike the foolish Golden Globes, BAFTA’s have not left out the Coen Bros’ True Grit, which picked up 8 nods, and have placed Hailee Steinfeld in the Leading Actress category (which is where she deserves to be). There is also much love for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which has also been ignored by the US ceremonies, including a very deserved nomination for Noomi Rapace.
Less loved is The Social Network, which picked up just 6, although in very major categories including Best Film and Director. Also largely ignored is Mike Leigh’s beautiful Another Year which is kind of unforgivable on the behalf of the British Academy, still there was a nomination for Lesley Manville in the Supporting Actress category. Duly deserved it is too. I can predict now this will be a regal year and The King’s Speech (perhaps undeservedly) will clean up at the ceremony on February 13th.
