These days, DC fans enjoy an embarrassment of riches when it comes to animation, as we receive at least three direct-to-video flicks on an annual basis. Still, there remain those who’ll stand their ground by saying no picture has surpassed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in the time since its initial release. Hey, even the voice of the Dark Knight himself, Kevin Conroy, says it’s his favorite animated film that he’s starred in.
Basically, this bad boy explored the origins of the Caped Crusader within the universe established by Batman: The Animated Series, with Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles of Batman and the Joker, respectively. Had you already seen the movie, then you’d know how Bruce Timm and company intertwined the rivalry those two shared quite seamlessly throughout past and present, making for something that was adored by critics and fans alike, and essentially serving as the Batman Begins of the animation world.
So, in case you missed the wide theatrical release back in 1993, know that Mask of the Phantasm will return to cinemas in celebration of its 25th anniversary on November 12th, to be exact. Thanks to Fathom Events – the same outfit that brought us limited engagements for the likes of Batman: The Killing Joke and Batman and Harley Quinn – 500 multiplexes across the United States will take part in the screening.
Don’t forget, the film in question will also be included in the massive package that is the Batman: The Complete Animated Series Blu-ray set dropping on October 30th, so you’ll definitely want to check out that if you have the cash to spend.
