You know how to hype a film and create controversy? Publicly predict that it will create controversy. Ben Affleck has apparently learned this lesson, as he informs Details (via The Playlist) that David Fincher’s upcoming thriller Gone Girl is going to cause some controversy among viewers when it finally hits theaters on October 3.

Gone Girl is based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name and features Affleck in the role of a husband implicated in the mysterious disappearance of his wife (Rosamund Pike). As the media circus builds, people begin pointing to him as the potential murderer. Affleck predicts that this aspect of the film will provoke some questions among couples:

That’s going to happen with this movie, I think. I feel like this is one where couples are going to be, ‘Do you think that was okay?’ And the husband’s got to decide, ‘Do I be honest, or do I live a comfortable life?.’

Hmm. That might also say a little something about Affleck, but I’m not certain if I want to go there.

Affleck’s character Nick Dunne is supposed to be both likable and reprehensible, and the story is as much about the combination of truth and lies that the marriage is built upon as it is a missing person thriller. As Gillian Flynn recently remarked to The New York Times, “Here is this guy who may have killed his wife, but I also would love to grab a cheeseburger with him.”

Gone Girl has already had its share of controversy, with rumors abounding about changes to the ending that might (or might not) anger fans of the novel. David Fincher has been quite cagey about those changes, only claiming that the film will remain true to the spirit of the book. That could mean a lot of things, but it certainly adds to the intrigue and mystery surrounding the film.

We will all get to make our decision about Gone Girl when it finally hits theaters on October 3. Until then, you will just have to wait and wonder, and check out some of the new images from the film below.

Excited yet?
