Though this hasn’t been discussed on screen, MCU fans will know that the Collector and the Grandmaster are actually brothers. Taneleer Tivan and the ruler of Sakaar are both Elders of the Universe and two of the oldest beings in existence. Perhaps to wile away eternity, they’ve each taken on time-consuming hobbies. For the Collector, that’s acquiring rare species and objects. For the Grandmaster, that’s holding his Contest of the Champions.
Both characters made a big impression on screen and it’d be interesting to see the brothers turn up together and see how they bounce off one another. For his part, Benicio del Toro – who brings Tivan to life – is more than up for the idea of working with Jeff Goldblum. In fact, he went so far as to say it would be “an honor” when Screen Rant put the question to him.
“No, I haven’t talked to him, but it would be an honor for me to work with him. I’ve been a fan and you know, it’d be great. It’d be great.”
Del Toro’s interest in this is intriguing, as Avengers: Infinity War suggested we’d seen the last of the Collector. After getting his hands on the Reality Stone back in Thor: The Dark Word, Tivan was tortured by Thanos into revealing where the Infinity Stone was. As his Collection was left in flames, we assumed he was dead, too. But perhaps the Mad Titan left him alive to serve some purpose.
As for the Grandmaster, Goldblum’s character was deposed by Thor and Korg’s revolution in Ragnarok. The fun post-credits scene of the movie saw him at the mercy of some scavengers, attempting to talk his way out of trouble. Like his brother, it’s unknown if the Grandmaster survived this but, given how popular the character is, we’d like to think he made it out alive.
Of the MCU movies we know to be on the slate, maybe the best chance we have of del Toro and Goldblum sharing the screen would be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But tell us, would you like to see the two characters together at some point? Have your say in the comments section below.
