Bill Murray Says He’s Down To Return For Ghostbusters 3

Surely a delight for original fans, Bill Murray says that if asked, he wouldn't mind taking part in Jason Reitman's upcoming Ghostbusters movie.

Maybe the question should change from “who you gonna call” to “are you gonna call him?”

Because it seemed like we’d never see Bill Murray in his ghost-busting suit again, his surprise cameo (though in a business suit) during Paul Feig’s 2016 remake was quite a delight. With Ghostbusters 3 on its way though, is it possible we’ll see the comic icon again?

Director Jason Reitman has called his upcoming film a “love letter” to the originals, with actor Ernie Hudson already confirmed to return. And in a recent interview with IndieWire, it looks like Murray’s also up to the idea:

“I did [the remake] and I would do this next one.”

Released in 1984, the original Ghostbusters film was a huge jumping off point for the actor, who’d at that point been known mostly for his various parts on Saturday Night Live. So, it’s not shocking at all to hear that he sees the franchise in a sentimental light.

“This franchise paid for my son’s college,” Murray added. “We made this thing. We are the caretakers of it. It’s a great thing and it was a really fun movie to make. It’s a real movie with some really funny stuff in it.”

Even if the legend returned to the crew though, it’s not likely that he’ll be at centerstage. Reitman is reportedly looking towards much younger actors for his film, specifically “two pairs of a brother-sister combo in the 12 and 17-year range.” But nevertheless, any callback to the original would be most welcome, and fortunately, it’s looking like Reitman’s got the same idea.

The extent to which Ghostbusters 3 pays homage to his father’s classic is among the many things we don’t know about the upcoming project. So far, the cast is taking shape with young stars Carrie Coon (The Leftovers), Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel), and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger ThingsIT) in the lead, but plot details are slim right now.

Would you like to see Bill Murray come back, though? How about the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? Actually, those are sort of silly questions, because honestly, who wouldn’t? But regardless, we’ll have to wait and see what happens once Ghostbusters 3 floats into theaters on July 10th, 2020.
