When these world-conquering creatures first became pop culture phenomenons back in the ’90s, a lot of folks were left baffled by what exactly Pokémon was, but now that this first generation of aspiring trainers are grown up, it’s starting to look like Detective Pikachu will draw in a fair few nostalgic adults alongside all the children who will surely head out to theaters to see it on opening day.

Not only that, but we’re starting to hear of some pretty exciting surprises that the film has in store for fans as well. Already, we know that Deadpool 2 star Rob Delaney will be playing an undisclosed role in the pic, while a secret villain was rumored earlier this week. But the fun doesn’t end there, as Bill Nighy’s part has now been revealed, and we’ve got the scoop on who he’s playing down below (minor spoilers to follow).

Sources close to We Got This Covered have confirmed that Nighy has been cast as the human villain of Detective Pikachu. He’ll be the mayor of the city and the man responsible for creating Mewtwo, who’s the aforementioned secret antagonist. From what we understand, Nighy’s character will aim to control the fan favorite Pokémon for his own ends.

That’s all we got from our source, but the more and more we learn about the movie, the more excited we get. Of course, it’ll probably help if the pic has the writing to back everything up, too, and so far, we can tell you that plot will focus on 21-year-old Tim, played by Justice Smith, who teams up with a furry little Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds as they search for Tim’s detective father. It isn’t long though before they uncover a plot that threatens to drive a wedge through the harmony established between humans and Pokémon, and from there, things really take off.

Again, it all sounds pretty exciting, and we’ll find out if this is a story worth telling when Detective Pikachu hits theaters on May 10th, 2019.
