If Harley Quinn has been angled as the beating heart of Birds of Prey, Warner Bros. and Cathy Yan’s female-fronted spinoff, then Huntress and Black Canary are the big-name supporting players.
They’re so big, in fact, that WB is said to be mulling over the possibility of full-blown spinoff movies for both Huntress and Black Canary, who will be brought to life by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, respectively.
Their addition was undoubtedly a major casting coup for Birds of Prey, which looks set to become one of Warner’s flagship properties for 2020, with The Batman and The Suicide Squad set to arrive the following year. And because principal photography is well underway, another set pic has emerged from Cathy Yan’s all-star spinoff, which brings us that little bit closer to Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli – better known to you, I and the good folks of Gotham City as Huntress.
See for yourself:
It’s by no means the most revealing of set photos; Winstead is seen here blinking into the sunlight, dressed in what we can only assume to be her full Huntress costume. Or, at least, the prototype version, as she’ll soon be joining forces with Harley Quinn and Black Canary to overthrow the crooked crime lord known only as Black Mask (Ewan McGregor) and essentially free Cassandra Cain from her plight. Rosie Perez also stars as Renee Montoya, a seasoned Gotham City police officer caught up in a world teeming with costumed crooks.
It’s the “R-rated girl gang” flick that’s fast become one of Warner’s most-talked-about projects, and on February 7th, 2020, we’ll be able to see what all the fuss is about when Birds of Prey takes flight.
