Black Adam Producer Says It’ll Start Filming Before End Of 2020

Are things finally about to get moving with DC's Black Adam movie? Dwayne Johnson has been attached to the role for the longest time, first as the antagonist of Shazam! and then as the star of his own spinoff film, but the project has been laboring in development hell for years. Thankfully, director Jaume Collet-Serra signed up to work with The Rock again following their collaboration on Disney's Jungle Cruise and now things seem to be running smoothly.

Producer Hiram Garcia has now supplied us with an update on the movie, even offering an estimate as to when it should begin filming. Garcia explained that Black Adam had to happen after Shazam! kicked off this corner of the DC universe, but now that it’s out, the anti-hero’s solo flick is due to go before cameras by the end of 2020.

“The success of Shazam! was awesome for us and it was important for us to launch that, get that out into the world and begin crafting this universe. It’s a big thing for us to create this universe, this DC section of the universe, with characters we have planned to bring into it, headlined by Shazam and Black Adam …Jaume Collet-Serra, he just closed his deal, which we’re very excited about, and the plan is to begin filming that end of next year.”

This production start date fits with what Shazam himself, Zachary Levi, has said about the shape of the franchise. He teased that Warner Bros. has a clear plan for the Shazam!/Black Adam series. First, we’ll have a couple of movies with him, then one or maybe even two Black Adams with Johnson. Then, Shazam! 3 will be the first time that the two nemeses will come face to face.

As for Shazam! 2, Levi’s promised that WB is looking to start work on that right away. The post-credits scene of the first film set up genius talking caterpillar (no, really) Mister Mind as the main villain of the sequel. While we wait for that, though, tell us how excited you are for Black Adam in the usual place down below.
