Well, it’s official: Black Panther is a monster hit. Not that we had any doubt it would be, mind you. Especially not after those projections which placed the pic ahead of The Avengers for its opening weekend.
To recap, Joss Whedon’s 2012 effort pulled in $207 million, which is a staggering amount, but it turns out analysts were pretty close with their projections for Ryan Coogler’s spinoff, as the film has now earned a wildly impressive $192 million and is expected to finish its 4 day President’s Day Weekend at $218 million.
That places it slightly below The Avengers, as that film did the aforementioned $207 million in just 3 days, while it’s going to take Panther another full day to break the $200 million mark. But still, this is an absolutely incredible performance for the movie and no doubt has the folks at Marvel Studios extremely happy right now.
In terms of where Black Panther‘s $192 million stands on the wider charts, well, it can safely claim the title of fifth biggest opening weekend, ever – with only The Avengers, Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ahead of it. Not bad for the first solo movie featuring a character who was only introduced briefly to audiences for the first time in 2016, eh?
There’s no stopping T’Challa, it seems, and with scores of positive reviews already in the tank, all signs point to the Wakandan epic reaching incredible heights. Keep in mind, too, that these are just the studio’s estimates. Industry analysts believe that it could rake in a bit more money than what’s being reported here, with Deadline saying it may actually climb to $195 million by the end of today and $225 million come Monday.
Hailed as an unmissable addition to the MCU, Black Panther is now in theaters and if Kevin Feige is to be believed, talks of a sequel are already underway. Long live the king!
