It’s dethroned Wonder Woman (and, as of March 11th, The Dark Knight!) and entered Hollywood’s exclusive billion-dollar club. But it seems Black Panther‘s total gross will continue to climb higher still.
As a matter of fact, according to the latest figures relayed by Box Office Mojo (h/t ComicBook.com), Black Panther is now projected to overtake The Avengers and become Marvel’s most successful movie at the domestic box office, well, ever.
Six years ago, Joss Whedon’s superhero crossover earned an eye-watering $513.4 million (unadjusted for inflation) in only 24 days of release for a domestic total of $623 million; Black Panther, meanwhile, has collected a suitably huge $562 million across the same timeframe (26 days, to be specific), indicating that T’Challa’s solo flick is on the verge of becoming one of the highest-grossing comic book movies ever made. If it isn’t already…
The question, really, is whether Black Panther can maintain its record-breaking momentum. As of this writing, the film’s total cume stands at a mighty $1.078 billion worldwide – for the record, The Avengers‘ tally remains locked at $1.52 billion, so we can’t imagine T’Challa will catch Earth’s Mightiest Heroes anytime soon – and after a relatively strong opening in China, it looks certain that the king of Wakanda will hold onto his status as the king of the box office for another few weeks, by which point Marvel will be ready to unleash Avengers: Infinity War upon the world.
It also includes a number of key cast members from Black Panther –namely Shuri, Okoye, M’Baku and Queen Ramonda – so it’s small wonder why Infinity War has been crowned the most-anticipated new release of 2018. Stay tuned to WGTC for more, as a new trailer (and perhaps a behind-the-scenes featurette) is said to be imminent.
