Well, it’s official: Black Panther is a monster hit. Not that we had any doubt it would be, mind you. Especially not after those projections which placed the pic ahead of The Avengers for its opening weekend.
To recap, Joss Whedon’s 2012 effort pulled in $207 million, which is a staggering amount, but it looks like analysts were right on the dot with their estimates for Ryan Coogler’s spinoff, as the initial box office numbers have now been adjusted. Yesterday, it was reported that Black Panther would finish the weekend with $192 million and end Monday off at $218 million – which was an absolutely incredible result. But today, those figures have climbed higher.
Turns out that the pic actually pulled in $201.8 million by Sunday’s end and once President’s Day Weekend comes to a close, that’ll reach $235 million – which means it’ll pass the Friday-Monday hauls of The Avengers ($226.3M) and Jurassic World ($234.1M).
What’s most impressive about this, though, is that it looks like Marvel’s latest effort broke $200 million on its opening weekend after all, becoming only the fifth film ever to do so, after The Avengers, Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Here’s how that list looks:
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $247,966,675
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi – $220,009,584
- Jurassic World – $208,806,270
- Marvel’s The Avengers – $207,438,708
- Black Panther – $201,797,000
So, there really is no stopping T’Challa at the moment, as he continues to claw his way into the hearts of moviegoers everywhere and right to the top of the box office charts. With tons of positive reviews in the tank, not to mention an A+ CinemaScore and a tremendous amount of positive buzz, all signs point to Black Panther continuing to dominate for some time to come, and given how excellent the film is, that’s great news.
Whether it’ll be able to hit the coveted $1 billion worldwide mark remains to be seen, but with a global haul of $404 million already in the bank, it shouldn’t have too much trouble doing so. And for a film based around a character who most general moviegoers probably didn’t even know about before his introduction in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, that’s absolutely incredible and just goes to show how well Black Panther is resonating with audiences.
