Confirming previous rumors to be true, Edward James Olmos has announced that his veteran Blade Runner Gaff will have a “poignant little scene” in Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming sci-fi sequel.
First reported by The TREND Talk Show – and later relayed by Bleeding Cool – Olmos dished on his Blade Runner 2049 role, and how a seven-page NDA agreement kept his involvement in the dark for so long. Those who have seen Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic will no doubt remember Gaff and his tiny origami figures. It was by no means a huge role, but his character has since spawned countless fan theories as to whether Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) is, in fact, a Replicant.
Couple this with the fact that Deckard has spent the past 30 years AWOL by the time Blade Runner 2049 opens and it could well be that Edward James Olmos’ returning character helps K (Ryan Gosling) zero in on his location. Only time will tell whether that is indeed the case, but for now, here’s what the actor had to share to The TREND Talk Show.
“I signed a seven-page non-disclosure contract. I did, my manager did, my agent did, everybody did. I couldn’t talk about it. I couldn’t talk about it to anybody about it. Guess what? This is the first time that I’m telling the whole world, that yes, I am going to be Gaff in Blade Runner 2049.”
When pressed about how his character fits into Denis Villeneuve’s long-in-development picture, Edward James Olmos was understandably coy, but the actor did shed some light on his single scene.
“Well it’s not about Gaff, but it’s about someone who is going to try to find out certain things about us back then. My role is like it was in the original – that time I only had four scenes, in this I only have one. But again, it’s a poignant little scene.”
Boasting the “same genre, same atmosphere” as Ridley Scott’s seminal original, Blade Runner 2049 descends into theaters on October 6th. It’s the second of two Scott sci-fi franchises poised to continue in 2017, what with Alien: Covenant being the first. Look for that one to arrive on May 19th.
