There are still three more releases before the old DC Extended Universe transitions into the new Gunn and Safran-headed DC Universe. Multiple direct or indirect updates have made headlines for the past year on both The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Both films have made the news, whether due to The Flash actor Ezra Miller’s controversies or the Aquaman sequel’s multiple reshoots. However, more is needed to know about Blue Beetle‘s progress while the film’s release date also nears.
Well, there finally be an update on the Blue Beetle‘s long-awaited trailer release. The tease comes from actor George Lopez, who plays Rudy, Jaime’s uncle in the film. George Lopez took to Instagram to post a picture of himself with lead actor Xolo Maridueña, director Angel Manuel Soto and co-star Harvey Guillen. Lopez captioned a tease in the post about the film’s trailer coming soon, increasing fans’ excitement over the news.
Most details of the film’s plot are under wraps, but hopefully the trailer will pull back the curtain on what the film may entail. Blue Beetle tells the story of Jaime Reyes who gains superpowers when an alien Blue Beetle scarab gifts him a powerful exoskeleton.
Despite a massive shadow cast over the film earlier, Blue Beetle has been safe from all the sacking and canceling of projects over at DC Studios after numerous management reshuffles. There was a time when Blue Beetle was tagging alongside Batgirl as an HBO Max exclusive release. When Batgirl got shelved, fans feared that this film would get tanked before making it to post-production. Surprisingly, the film got a level-up promotion and was given the green light for a theatrical release. The film is on a confirmed track for release on August 18, 2023.
Blue Beetle seems like an exciting project for the DC Universe as it’s the first film in the franchise with an all-new cast and no confirmed character from the DCEU making an appearance. Gunn and Safran earlier confirmed that Blue Beetle is disconnected from the previous movies and can be retconned into the new DCU. Unlike Cavill’s Superman or Affleck’s Batman, this would further save Blue Beetle‘s potential future in the franchise. Probably that’s why Blue Beetle has survived all the franchise changes and alterations. But it’s important that Warner Bros. effectively markets Blue Beetle to save it from the Shazam!-like treatment if the character really can fit into the forthcoming DCU streamline.
This little tease from George Lopez is big news for DC fans who expect Blue Beetle to bring DC’s live-action adaptations back to their former glory. Now, it’s a little wait until we witness what the young Beetle has in store for us.
