The odds might be increasingly stacked against Blue Beetle after the industry strikes nuked any chance it had of launching a promotional offensive through press interviews and premieres, but star Xolo Maridueña remains as confident as ever.
Finding a sterling method of hyping up his DCU debut without breaking the rules, the actor paid tribute to the cast, crew, and Blue Beetle Battalion in a recent social media post, with social media users taking matters into their own hands in an effort to prevent it from becoming the franchise’s third colossal commercial catastrophe of the year.
Whether or not that happens is up for debate, but regardless of Blue Beetle sinking or swimming, James Gunn has confirmed that Maridueña is part of his plans for the future of the DCU. Taking that sentiment one step further, the Cobra Kai veteran went so far as to refer to himself as the superhero sandbox’s “ultimate key” in an interview with Total Film, explaining that Jaime Reyes can fit in anywhere.
“In this movie, he feels like an adult but put him next to a Batman or a Superman and he’s definitely a kid. So I think there is opportunity, not only within the Blue Beetle universe but within the rest of the plans, to add him in.”
His wish will be granted if Gunn holds up his end of the bargain, then, and the smart money would be on Blue Beetle eventually crossing paths with both the Dark Knight and Man of Steel whenever the DCU does its first major crossover, which is a contractual obligation for any comic book IP.
