Disney had a few big hits at the box office last year, but one of the most crowd-pleasing had to have been Coco, their second animation effort of 2017. A Mexican-themed adventure film that introduced audiences to Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) and his cute canine, Dante, the pic earned rave reviews and went down as another big win for both the Mouse House and Pixar.
For those who haven’t had a chance to see it yet, Coco follows the aforementioned Miguel, who’s caught under the spell of legendary Mexican guitarist Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt) and longs to head down a similar career path, effectively up-ending his family’s ludicrous, generations-old ban on music. His pursuit of happiness leads him to Ernesto’s magical instrument, though after laying hands on the guitar itself, Miguel finds himself whisked off to the Land of the Dead, a parallel dimension where his adventure begins in earnest.
It’s here, deep in the fantastical realm, that our pint-sized hero hopes to uncover the real story behind his family’s history, and hopefully bring an end to that aforementioned ban once and for all.
In his review from a few months back, our very own Matt Donato had nothing but good things to say about the movie, concluding that, “Coco shows more life in death than 99% of movies today, which should come as no surprise as Pixar once again aims directly for the heart.” That’s a sentiment that many shared and now, we’re learning a bit about when we can expect to re-watch the film, as some early Blu-ray release details have leaked online.
While Disney has yet to announce anything official, Target may have let the cat out of the bag, telling us that Coco will be available for purchase on February 27th, 2018. Furthermore, they’ve announced that their exclusive edition will come with an illustrated storybook and a filmmaker’s gallery. Of course, more special features will surely be included as well, but until the studio makes an announcement of some sort, we can only speculate as to what those may be.
Still, it’s exciting to know that we’ll soon get the chance to revisit Coco, as it truly was one of 2017’s most delightful movies and we can’t wait so sit down and watch it again.
