Having sat out 2010’s Toy Story 3, Bo Peep makes her long-awaited return to the series in the upcoming Toy Story 4, and in a new clip shared by Good Morning America, we see how Annie Potts’ character has changed in the twenty years since we last saw her.
The footage sees Bo, Woody, Jessie and Buzz on a mission to recover a toy who’s stuck outside in the yard. After spotting the remote control car struggling in the rain, Woody and his old romantic interest agree to initiate “Operation Pull Toy,” drawing on the services of Slinky Dog, some acrobatic Barbies and various other peers to rescue their imperiled friend.
Though the clip sees Bo in her old shepherdess clothing, rather than the new adventurer’s outfit she’s been wearing in all the promotional images, the video still provides plenty of evidence for Potts’ claim from a few weeks ago that Bo has grown to be “modern, independent, capable and confident” in her years of absence. While it’s unclear how the character reunites with the old gang, we’ve heard it said been previously that Bo has been experiencing life on the road, and in the words of director Josh Cooley, has “taken control of her own destiny.” After crossing paths once more with Woody, however, the two of them come to realize that they’ve grown worlds apart.
Given the closure offered by the third movie, Toy Story 4 has been met with some resistance from fans who feel that the story has little need to continue, but if there’s just one arc that was left unresolved by the previous movies, it would definitely be Bo’s. We’ll find out if the character’s journey can be brought to a satisfying conclusion when the film hits theaters on June 21st, 2019.
