The fourth installment in the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, made $139.5 million this weekend at the box office, exceeding Summit’s expectations for the film, but falling just short of the $142.8 million achieved by the second Twilight film, New Moon.
The previous Twilight film, Eclipse, opened on a Wednesday, making its numbers incomparable to those of Breaking Dawn – Part 1. Needless to say, $139.5 million is a miraculous number for almost any series.
As usual for such a series, the critics and audiences didn’t agree. Breaking Dawn – Part 1 got a meager 27% on Rottentomatoes, the lowest score for any of the films in the series so far.
Coming in second place was Happy Feet Two, which was the only other new release up against Twilight, and it made only $22 million. The original Happy Feet made $41.5 million, so this is definitely a disappointment. However, Happy Feet Two still has a few days to collect coins before The Muppets movie comes out.
Third place went to Immortals, which made $23.1 million, making its total $53 million, fourth place went to Jack and Jill, which made $12 million, making its total $41 million, and fifth place went to Puss in Boots, which made $10.7 million, making its total $122.3 million.
