From the blood-red posters to the poignant behind-the-scenes featurette, this past weekend proved to be a busy one for the Mouse House and, in particular, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Due to arrive in December, Rian Johnson’s sci-fi sequel is poised to take the famous Skywalker saga in an exciting new direction, before the as-yet-untitled Episode IX puts a bow on Disney’s rebooted trilogy in two years’ time. Colin Trevorrow is at the helm for that one.
But before we get too far ahead of ourselves on the Star Wars timeline, The Last Jedi picks up where The Force Awakens left off, when Daisy Ridley’s Jedi-in-training Rey crossed paths with the great Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Truth be told, Hamill didn’t have an awful lot to work with aboard J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival, but rest assured, Disney CEO Bob Iger believes the actor is about to deliver his best performance yet.
There’s also the gut-wrenching passing of Carrie Fisher to consider. Yes, sadly Leia Organa’s time in the Star Wars universe is coming to an end, especially now that Disney has ruled out the possibility of a digital recreation in Star Wars: Episode IX. It adds an extra sense of gravitas to the recent behind-the-scenes showcase, and in case you missed it, or if you simply want a play-by-play breakdown, we’ve included a gallery of screenshots down below.
Story-wise, and with the exception of untimely leaks, Disney and Lucasfilm have kept The Last Jedi‘s narrative under and key, but during the midst of D23 this past weekend, the Mouse House relayed a brief synopsis to the folks at Making Star Wars. And we do mean brief.
Aside from a nod to “age-old mysteries of the Force” and “shocking revelations,” it’s a fairly vague overview of what to expect from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But it’s certainly better than nothing.
In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in U.S. theaters on December 15, 2017.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi makes a beeline for theaters on December 15th, and if you’re wanting to catch a poignant tribute to the late, great Carrie Fisher, you may want to hang around after the credits roll on Rian Johnson’s long-awaited blockbuster.
