If you’re the type of person who’s just too eager to wait a few more weeks to get even a taste of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, then this post is for you. If watching the first 10 minutes of Marvel’s latest blockbuster in waiting isn’t enough to wet your whistle, then we also have a new IMAX poster for you to feast your eyes on. Still not enough? How about some idle speculation courtesy of the Captain America screenwriters as to where they may take the hero in the inevitable part 3? If any, or all, of this interests you, read on to immerse yourself in today’s Star-Spangled hero news.
First up is the first 10 minutes of The Winter Soldier. A lot of the feedback from the film so far has been very positive, making the already advanced levels of hype darn near stratospheric. When you see these first 10 minutes, which expands on the previously released two-minute segment of the opening action scene, you’ll probably be all the more excited to check out the full thing. But why take our word for it, click play on the embed below and see for yourself.
Looks good so far, right? The instant bromance between Sam Wilson and Cap is good, as is the re-introduction of Black Widow with her line about looking for the Smithsonian to pick up a fossil, indicating the burgeoning camaraderie between her and Captain America. (Remember when he called her “ma’am” in The Avengers? Ah, good memories.)
Next up is this IMAX poster. Not only is it evocative of an old-fashioned propaganda poster, but it looks a bit like the cover art by Steve Epting while he was the artist on the Captain America comic book. It was Epting, with writer Ed Brubaker, who introduced the character The Winter Soldier, and authored the original storyline that the movie is based on.
And, as we look to the immediate future and the release of the The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios is looking further into the future to Captain America 3, which is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016. As to what threats Cap might face in this third solo adventure, screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely already have some ideas, and they dropped a few hints in an interview with Den of Geek (via the Hollywood Reporter).
“You can probably predict some of the threads we would like to pick up again that we’ve laid out there,” said McFeely. “We always go back to the comics and dive back in and look at anything we’ve missed in the last few years that might be relevant.”
“There’s a couple [of stories] we’re playing with right now that we really want to take elements from,” said Markus who added, “All I’m saying is psychotic 1950s Cap.”
Markus may be referring to William Burnside, a Cold War attempt to carry on the Captain America legacy while the original was on ice in the Arctic. According to comic book lore, the variation of the super soldier serum used to create Burnside drove him mad, turning him into a paranoid/racist opposite Captain America. Burnside was another character brought back to the comics during Brubaker and Epting’s critically-acclaimed run on Captain America.
Keep in mind that all of this is simply what may be involved for the third Captain America movie. Nothing is certain and for now, all we can do is speculate and patiently wait for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which hits theaters everywhere on April 4.
