In these last few weeks, the fans have been sent back and forth on the identity of Jude Law’s character in Captain Marvel. While the assumption for much of the year was that the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star is playing Mar-Vell in the upcoming MCU flick, a Funko! Pop leak from last month suggested that his role is instead the villainous Yon-Rogg.
An image caption found earlier this week on Disney’s official movie site, however, indicated that we were right the first time, labelling Law’s character as “Mar-Vell, the leader of Starforce,” but now another toy leak is suggesting Yon-Rogg once again. Confused yet?
The promo art shows the nemesis of Carol Danvers in his Kree outfit, along with a description that slots in nicely with what we’ve heard before about Law’s role – save, of course, for the character’s name:
“Leader of the Starforce team, Yon-Rogg is a hero among the Kree and a key asset to the Supreme Intelligence in the war against the Skrulls.”
So, does this mean that Law’s playing two roles in Captain Marvel? Are Yon-Rogg and Mar-Vell the same person? Could it be that there’s no Mar-Vell, and whoever wrote the aforementioned Disney website caption was just making the same assumption as the rest of us about Law’s character? Time will tell, but in related news, it’s perhaps significant that the Disney caption has been changed to simply read, “Leader of the Starforce.”
Regardless, Carol Danvers will have enough foes to fight already in her solo debut, with Ben Mendelsohn playing a dual role of his own as the shape-shifting leader of the Skrulls and Nick Fury’s boss at S.H.I.E.L.D. We’ll find out what further enemies hide in Carol’s midst when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
