UPDATE: Collider is now reporting that Barry Keoghan has joined the cast as well.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 pushed back significantly thanks to the firing and re-hiring of James Gunn, The Eternals is shaping up to be a key part of our journey further into the cosmic side of the MCU. And while plot details are still being kept tightly under wraps, what we have heard is certainly enough to pique our curiosity and have us feeling hopeful that this will be one of Phase 4’s most exciting releases.
From what we understand, writers Matthew and Ryan Firpo are taking inspiration more from Jack Kirby’s 1976 work on the series than Neil Gaiman’s version and though the details on the film’s story seemingly end there, we do have some exciting new casting updates to report on today.
The other week at Comic-Con, Marvel revealed the incredible roster of talent they’d assembled for the project, telling us that Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Lia McHugh and Don Lee will be starring. But now, we’re learning of one more new addition, with Variety reporting that Captain Marvel‘s Gemma Chan has joined the cast.
MCU fans will know that Chan played Minn-Erva in the aforementioned Brie Larson-led movie, which makes this a bit confusing. As Variety notes, it’s currently unclear whether she’ll be reprising Minn-Erva once again for The Eternals, or if the film will see her in a different role entirely. Either way, though, she’s definitely involved in the pic.
The Eternals will be the second Phase 4 movie out the door, with production now gearing up and the complete cast beginning to take shape. We imagine most of the major players are now set, but should anyone else hop on board in the coming weeks before shooting begins, we’ll certainly let you know.
Until then, though, tell us, who do you think Gemma Chan is playing? As always, sound off down below.
