The upcoming Captain Marvel looks like it could well be an important work in laying the foundations for further cosmic outings in Marvel’s Phase 4, so it only figures that it shares some connections with the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. We’ve long known that Lee Pace will be reprising his role as the villainous Ronan the Accuser from James Gunn’s 2014 series-starter, and now it seems that we may also witness the return of a certain intergalactic police force.
The new Captain Marvel tie-in book Starforce on the Rise, written by Steve Behling, has been described as a middle-grade novel about Carol’s early days fighting in the Kree-Skrull War, but on the front cover of the release, we can see that the MCU’s most powerful superhero, along with what just might be Jude Law’s character, are in conflict with the Nova Corps.
The last we saw of this group on the big screen was back in the first Guardians, and after the fall of Xandar mentioned in Avengers: Infinity War, the current state of this law-enforcement team feels pretty up in the air. Regardless, with the Captain Marvel movie taking things back to the ‘90s, there’s plenty of opportunity for the Nova Corps to make a return without tampering much with present-day MCU events, in which case, this tie-in book could be a taste of what’s to come, both in Marvel’s next cinematic release and in the cosmic adventures that will likely follow in its wake.
Either way, the book gives us one more piece of evidence to pore over in a week that’s hardly at a loss for Captain Marvel material. We’ll find out what familiar faces Carol’s solo debut has in store when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
