She might not’ve appeared in the big crossover event, but Avengers: Infinity War gave us our first tease of the arrival of Captain Marvel in its post-credits scene. As Nick Fury turned to dust along with half of the universe (thanks a lot, Thanos), he sent a call for help on a curious pager-like device that displayed the familiar logo of Carol Danvers. It’s clear what this meant: Brie Larson’s heroine is going to show up to help the remaining heroes in Avengers 4.
The origin of Fury’s pager may have been revealed in the Captain Marvel trailer, too. The first teaser for the 1990s-set movie shows us the initial meeting between the young Nick Fury and Danvers. At one point, we see the future S.H.I.E.L.D. director sending a message on his beeper, possibly to Carol. If you look closely, you can see that it strongly resembles the one in Infinity War.
Don’t believe us? Just look at the comparisons below for proof:
You’ll notice that the central part of the IW version is the same as the one seen in the CM trailer. However, it’s clearly been heavily upgraded and adapted in the twenty years since the events of the movie. The most obvious suggestion for why this is necessary is that it amplifies the device’s signal enough for it to send a message into space.
The general consensus is that Captain Marvel must disappear into the galaxy – perhaps because she’s on the hunt for the Skrulls or because she goes back to live with the Kree? – at the end of her solo venture, but leaves Fury with a way to contact her when the Earth’s in peril. Exactly why he didn’t give her a beep when the Chitauri invaded or Ultron attacked we’re not sure, but apparently he finally decided that the time was right when Thanos unleashed his wrath.
And going by the trailer, Captain Marvel might be just what the surviving heroes need to help them defeat the Mad Titan in Avengers 4.
