Nick Fury has been largely absent from the MCU for these past few years, but with the upcoming Captain Marvel, it seems we’ll be learning a whole lot more about the future director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Though Marvel’s next release will serve primarily to introduce Carol Danvers to the franchise, the film also chronicles a relatively early chapter in the life of Samuel L. Jackson’s character, and when asked if the movie can be considered a Nick Fury origin story to a certain extent, producer Jonathan Schwartz suggested that this was the case.
“There’s a Nick Fury origin story in there,” Schwartz told ComicBook.com. “The movie is definitely called Captain Marvel. It becomes a two-hander for parts of it. So we sort of wanted to give the audience that kind of young Nick Fury origin story as you put it and it’s all there. Hopefully in a way that compliments Carol’s adventure, too.”
Though Fury would go on to be part of the adventures of plenty more superheroes, Schwartz mentions that the relationship between Nick and Carol “benefits in its uniqueness by having Carol be the first superhero he’s ever encountered or really heard of in his life.” And just as Fury would later tell Tony Stark that he’s “become part of a bigger universe,” Schwartz explained that Captain Marvel would serve as the younger Nick’s introduction to a whole new world.
“She sort of gets to be the window to him for this entire, bigger universe. So, he’s a little less of the ‘I know everything there is to know’ Nick Fury that we see in the later movies, and a little bit more, perhaps, open to new ideas.”
Though Fury is already known to play a role in the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home, Marvel Studios’ plans for the character beyond this year remain unclear. Nonetheless, if the MCU’s next film is to flesh out the backstory of the Avengers assembler, then there’s surely potential for the movie to sow the seeds for future outings. After all, Jackson recently mentioned that he has no plans to retire the character, and there was even a report last year which alleged that Fury might have his own TV show on Disney Plus.
Such a project is still to be confirmed, but in the meantime, we can expect to learn plenty about Nick Fury, his superhero friend, and the unfortunate incident that cost him an eye when Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
