Following the news that John Wick 2 will start shooting this Fall, some surprising details have come out in regards to who will be taking the helm of the sequel. Chad Stahelski and David Leitch directed the first instalment together, but with both filmmakers being offered any number of projects following that movie’s success, it has now been revealed that Stahelski will direct the sequel by himself.
The exact reason for that is unknown at this time, but Leitch is staying on as an Executive Producer, so it’s not like John Wick 2 isn’t still in good hands. It would have been far more concerning if both directors had decided to move on, especially as it’s hard to imagine anyone else recapturing the same magic they did with the surprise box office hit earlier this year.
[zergpaid]After positive reviews and strong word of mouth, John Wick went on to gross $78 million worldwide on a budget of only $20 million. Throw in an additional $40 million or so from home video sales, and it’s easy to understand why a follow-up has become a priority. Screenwriter Derek Kolstad has been confirmed as returning to pen John Wick 2, while Keanu Reeves will of course reprise the titular role.
The first movie revolved around legendary assassin John Wick, now retired from his violent career after marrying the love of his life. However, her sudden death leaves John in deep mourning, and when sadistic mobster Iosef Tarasov and his thugs steal John’s prized car and kill the puppy that was a last gift from his wife, John unleashes the remorseless killing machine within and seeks vengeance all while fending off bounty hunters out to stop him.
