Ever since Channing Tatum took a cameo role in Michael Mann‘s Public Enemies, it has been obvious that the Step Up star wanted to make a shift into serious dramatic acting, and it seems like he is making a good go at it.
Not too long ago, Tatum caught the eye of director Steven Soderbergh, who cast the young star in his action thriller Haywire. Since then, the two have gone on to work together in the upcoming Magic Mike, which is out later this month, as well as Soderbergh’s new film The Bitter Pill.
On top of this, Tatum has already starred in two films this year; The Vow and 21 Jump Street, both of which were hits. If the man wasn’t busy enough with all of the aforementioned work, he also has two more films coming up, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Bennett Miller‘s Foxcatcher.
Despite having a very, very full plate, Tatum doesn’t seem like he wants to slow down anytime soon. Today he has confirmed to MTV that he will star in The Wachowskis‘ next film, which is currently titled Jupiter Ascending.
Tatum is set to play a bounty hunter in the film who is sent “to take a Russian immigrant (Kunis) who possesses the same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe and is therefore a threat to her otherwise immortal rule.”
Natalie Portman was rumoured for the project early on but it seems she won’t be a part of it anymore. Joseph Gordon-Levitt may end up in the film though as an offer has already been made to the actor.
Tatum also spoke to E! about his experience working with his The Bitter Pill co-star Rooney Mara, saying:
“She’s the most mousy and terrifying person I’ve ever met. She’s such a little introvert. She’s also the sweetest little thing you’ve ever met.Rooney can get this glazed over like look in her eyes that you’re like, ‘Oh, God—I hope I never see that coming my way. She’s truly one of the most fabulous actresses. She has a skill set that I have never seen with the actresses I’ve worked with. Everybody’s different and have the things that they’re strong at, but she’s special, for sure.”
The pair play husband and wife in Soderbergh’s new film, written by Contagion screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. It follows “a woman named Elizabeth (Mara) who turns to prescription meds to cope with the anxiety of the upcoming release from prison of her husband (Tatum).”
The new set photos from the film look great, and we get a good look at Mara and Tatum as well as Jude Law, who plays Mara’s doctor in the film.
Jupiter Ascending is set to begin filming later this year, while The Bitter Pill will be release on February 8th, 2013.
