Bats, The Joker, Poison Ivy and many more famous, blocky faces feature in the latest round of character posters for The LEGO Batman Movie.
Headed up by first-time director Chris McKay, who served as animation co-director on Warner’s wildly successful LEGO Movie two years back, LEGO Batman plucks Will Arnett’s roguish vigilante and thrusts him into the center of his own origins story, one in which the Joker – played here with irreverent glee by Zach Galifianakis – stages a hostile takeover of Gotham City. If that’s a narrative arc that sounds overly familiar, don’t fret; McKay’s animated romp is shaping up to be a clever, almost meta take on the famed Caped Crusader.
In terms of this new batch of graffiti-esque posters, Entertainment Weekly premiered the stylish one-sheets earlier today, and each came tethered with a brief character bio designed to separate friend from foe. Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, for instance, will be voiced by Rosario Dawson (Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil), who is set to switch gears from Marvel to DC in time for LEGO Batman.
On the other end of the moral spectrum, actress Jenny Slate will portray the inimitable Harley Quinn, picking up the mantle from Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) in the process. If you want a more thorough breakdown of each on-screen persona – Bats included – head over to EW for more.
Angled as the second step in Warner’s animated franchise, The LEGO Batman Movie will go up against Fifty Shades Darker and John Wick: Chapter 2 on February 10, 2017. Further down the pipeline we also have the LEGO Ninjago Movie (September 22, 2017) and The LEGO Movie 2 (February 8, 2019) to look forward to.
