New images were released today for the upcoming film Boyhood, directed by Richard Linklater. Considering that Linklater is a director known for highly experimental films, such as the rotoscoped philosophical conversation drama Waking Life, it is really saying something that Boyhood might be his most ambitious work yet.
The film stars newcomer Ellar Coltrane as an American boy, and follows his growth and maturation from age six through the end of his high school career. What is remarkable about the project, however, is that the young boy will be growing in real time, as Linklater shot the movie a small piece at a time each year for 12 consecutive years. In case you needed another reason to get excited about the project, Coltrane will have a terrific pair of supporting actors in Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, who play the boy’s divorced parents. Hawke was one of the stars of Linklater’s wonderful Before Sunrise trilogy, and he and Arquette both worked with the director on Fast Food Nation.
Linklater is one of the best directors working today, and all the early signs indicate he has delivered yet another brilliant work with Boyhood. He won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, and took home the Louis Black “Lone Star” Award at South By Southwest.
Boyhood will have a limited release on July 11th. You can check out the images from the film below.
