With all the hoopla surrounding the reveal of Wonder Woman 1984‘s official title this morning – not to mention the first images from the film featuring Diana Prince and Steve Trevor, respectively, being released – it’s important that we not experience sensory overload and remember what else the picture has to offer.
That said, one of the biggest talking points surrounding any superhero flick is that of whom the main villain will be. In this case, it’s the Cheetah, who’ll be played by Kristen Wiig. Though not perhaps the first person who’d spring to mind for this particular gig, we can’t rule out the famed comedian churning out a memorable dramatic performance like, say, the late Robin Williams did in films such as One Hour Photo or Insomnia.
According to Vulture’s senior editor Kyle Buchanan, though, Wiig’s character arc won’t be that of the typical villain, which he revealed with the following Tweet:
“Since today is a good day for WONDER WOMAN scoops, I’ve heard that Kristen Wiig starts the sequel as Diana’s friend, not her foe. She emulates Wonder Woman, then seeks to usurp her.”
Having read that, one has to think it’s very possible Jenkins and company are looking to Greg Rucka’s recent run on Wonder Woman comics that kicked off the Rebirth era, as that yarn directly dealt with Wondy and Cheetah’s complicated relationship.
Still, there’s much other material from which to draw inspiration, as there’ve been so many takes on the villainess. Really, if you don’t believe me, go pick up a copy of Jim Krueger and Alex Ross’ Justice if you’re game for a few surprises.
All will be revealed when Wonder Woman 1984 opens in theaters on November 1, 2019, though we’ll keep you posted as more word comes down the grapevine.
