When anyone refers to a killer doll from the movies, it’s clear they’re referring to Chucky. The pint-sized Good Guys doll has been on the rampage since the eighties, with no signs of stopping. His most recent sequel, Curse Of Chucky, served as a solid reinvention of the franchise. The coda of that outing made it clear how the series would progress, but in light of creator Don Mancini’s latest comments, we might be seeing a crossover with Annabelle.
Talking to USA Today (via Slash Film), Mancini announced that he’d be more than happy to see Chucky unite onscreen with horror’s newest doll on the block, Annabelle:
“I am hoping that at some future point we have Annabelle and Chucky team up,” says Mancini. “I can see that (even) in 20 years from now.”
A spinoff of James Wan’s chiller hit, The Conjuring, Annabelle opened this past week in second spot behind Gone Girl. While it received negative reviews, blaming lacklustre scares for its downfall, it still netted $37.2 million in its opening weekend. On a budget of $6.5 million, there will likely be interest from the studio to continue the demonic doll’s franchise. Could that hook into Chucky’s timeline? Well, Mancini is cetainly eager for their paths to cross, as he went on to say:
“We would be into it, the only problem is that we are in different studios. That would probably be years worth of red tape to work it out. But if it all could be worked out, then yes, we’re very into it.”
The notion of a crossover, like a Freddy Vs. Jason-style outing, would probably sit well with genre fans. I know I’d be intrigued by the idea. As Mancini said, it often boils down to a rights issue. And there’s of course, the little matter of Chucky’s unhinged spouse, Tiffany:
“The bride of Chucky is going to be very upset if Chucky starts to stray. If I were Annabelle, I’d be watching my back.”
Chucky Vs. Annabelle – who do you think would win in that fight?
