Chris Pine Circling Male Lead Role In Wonder Woman

Star Trek star Chris Pine has long been the subject of fan-casting for comic book films, as he was rumored for the role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern as recently as March of this year, among others. Now, it's being reported that he may have landed a superhero film at last, though in a twist of fate, it'll be he who serves as the love interest to the title character.

Pine may be the third Trek alum on this list, but he's got a slight advantage over Urban and Yelchin: He's already taken the reigns of a role previously played by Harrison Ford. I'm talking, of course, about last year's ill-fated Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. That film may have failed to launch a franchise for Pine, but he's proven in his portrayal of James Kirk that he can handle all of the things we love about Indiana Jones.

Star Trek star Chris Pine has long been the subject of fan-casting for comic book films, as he was rumored for the role of Hal Jordan/Green Lantern as recently as March of this year, among others. Now, it’s being reported that he may have landed a superhero film at last, though in a twist of fate, it’ll be he who serves as the love interest to the title character.

According to Variety, Pine is circling Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman for the part of the titular heroine’s love interest, Steve Trevor. Scott Eastwood was previously rumored for the role, but has landed a different, more mysterious part in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad.  Other names like Liam Hemsworth and Alexander Skarsgard were rumored as well, but it appears that Pine is the new frontrunner.

In the comics, Steve Trevor is an intelligence officer in the United States Army during World War II, whose plane crashes on Paradise Island, the home of the Amazons. There, he’s nursed back to health by Princess Diana, who falls in love with him and follows him to the outside world where she later becomes Wonder Woman.

We don’t yet know when the Wonder Woman film takes place in the DC Cinematic Universe continuity; recent rumors suggest that Diana is hundreds of years old, so it’s conceivable that the traditional WWII storyline could unfold on screen. That, or Pine’s Steve Trevor is a contemporary military officer who runs into Diana in the present day. Either way, this is exciting news for Chris Pine fans, though I suspect some will be disappointed that he won’t be suiting up as a superhero instead.

Starring Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman is slated to hit theaters on June 23rd, 2017.
