Amidst the glitz and glam of last night’s Oscar ceremony, MTV took the opportunity to quiz Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt on the recent allegations that the actor is in line to play Indiana Jones in Disney’s nascent reboot.
Admittedly, speculation has been swirling for some time, and the most recent report via Deadline stated that Steven Spielberg would direct the project if all of the parts fell into place. Alas, whatever the outcome, Pratt stated that he isn’t overwhelmed by the pressure of being linked with a screen icon, though remained coy on revealing too much information at such an early stage.
“It’s all nothing until it’s something and so far it’s not something….I don’t think it’s overwhelming to contemplate….It’d be cool. No one’s called me. (There’s) A lot of talk about it. The pressure would come just because it’s such a great franchise you wouldn’t want to get it wrong, so for me it would have to be perfect to do it. We’ll see, like I said it’s nothing until it’s something.”
As the co-creator of the legendary franchise, it would make complete sense for Spielberg to step behind the lens, particularly when you consider how derided The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was when it released in 2008. Moreover, it’s understood that Harrison Ford hasn’t given up the ghost when it comes to reprising his role as the wise-cracking archaeologist, despite the fact that the actor will turn 73 in July.
But the question remains: will Chris Pratt pick up the whip for Disney? Time will tell. There’s no doubting that the actor has established himself as a bankable lead thanks to Guardians and Universal’s upcoming Jurassic World, and when you consider that Spielberg hand-picked Pratt for the lead in Colin Trevorrow’s sequel, he’s certainly the most likely candidate to bag the title role in the studio’s Indiana Jones retelling.
