Although many superhero movies have graced the silver screen since The Dark Knight Trilogy concluded its run back in 2012, it could be argued that very few to follow have laid claim to having the same cultural impact or have garnered as much praise. Really, in addition to Batman Begins being the film that put the reboot concept on the map, it, and the trilogy as a whole, showed that comic book flicks were capable of doing much more than just selling toys – they could tell stories as rich and as layered as what can be found in the source material itself.
Of course, much of the credit goes to the man who oversaw the whole thing, that being director Christopher Nolan. Sure, there are probably other auteurs in Hollywood who are also fans of the Caped Crusader, but it took the right filmmaker at the right time to breathe new life into the genre. And, to the surprise of nobody, the success of his Batman movies allowed him to pretty much write his own ticket at Warner Bros.
As such, he went on to helm various other beloved blockbusters that didn’t feature costumed heroes. And soon enough, each offering of his released by WB will soon be getting the an upgrade of sorts via the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. Granted, we got wind that this could happen a few months back, but knowing that the Christopher Nolan Collection will arrive in time for the holidays is indeed good news.
So, at your discretion, you could pick up a seven-film collection that includes Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk for a suggested retail price of $149.99. Or, you could just opt for The Dark Knight Trilogy itself for $70.99. But if you’re choosy and/or on a budget, each movie can be purchased individually at varying prices.
Here’s what Nolan himself had to say about the upgrading process:
“4K Ultra HD with HDR is an incredibly exciting new home video format that allows a much closer recreation of viewing the original film print. The deeper color palette comes closer to matching the analogue colors of film and we’ve restored the original theatrical mixes for this release. If you can’t rewatch these films in the theater, this is the best experience you can have in your own home.”
The Dark Knight Trilogy – and the Christopher Nolan Collection as a whole – arrive in stores on December 19.
