Sharing an opening weekend with box office juggernaut Fifty Shades Of Grey might be the kiss of death for certain flicks, but not for Matthew Vaughn’s spy actioner, Kingsman: The Secret Service. Packing an all-star cast, dazzling action and plenty of quips, it made a solid $42 million across this holiday weekend. Factor in the international box office receipts and the movie took home $85 million worldwide, easily covering its budget… and making a sequel seem all the more likely.

Considering a major incident which occurs midway through the movie – wherein Colin Firth’s character Harry Hart appears to be fatally shot – the idea of the actor’s return is certainly an intriguing one. Would Vaughn opt for the ‘he wasn’t really injured’ motif, or figure out a way to reinvent the character? (Evil twin, perhaps?) During an interview with USA Today (via Collider), the director addressed the topic:
“A lot of people are very upset that Colin might not be in the sequel but I’m coming up with ideas at the moment. If people buy tickets in America, I’ve got a feeling we’ll figure out a way for having Colin back.”

Before the flick even arrived in US theaters, Vaughn’s aspirations for another outing looked positive – even if they were premature. Those early ideas hint at exploring the American branch of the organization, hopefully showcasing a little more of Mark Strong’s mentor role. Judging by the critical success of the film on top of its considerable box office haul, that prospect would no doubt be happily received.
