J.K. Simmons is already a superhero movie icon thanks to his role as J. Jonah Jameson in the original Spider-Man trilogy, but he’ll soon be entering the genre once again as Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU. Amongst everything else that’s going on in the movie, fans are excited to see Simmons don the detective’s mighty mustache for the first time in Justice League, but from the sounds of it, we shouldn’t expect to see a lot of him.
According to the actor, the police commissioner has what he describes as a “don’t blink or you’ll miss it” role in the film. Simmons revealed that while chatting with Red Carpet News TV, when he said the following:
“Commissioner Gordon, my incarnation of Commissioner Gordon, in the first Justice League movie of what we hope will be a handful is a kind of don’t blink or you’ll miss it introduction of the character. I didn’t spend all that much time… we shot it here in London, which was great, it’s always fun to be here, but I still haven’t seen the finished thing put together.”
“As a matter of fact, I was doing ADR last week, additional dialogue recording last week so they’re still putting the finishing touches on it. But I’m, really, really excited to see it and to be a part of the DC Universe which is a little grittier. Although, having said that, I think there’s a fair amount of levity to this incarnation too.”
The actor also explained that his character wasn’t one of those whose role was increased in the reshoots undertaken by Joss Whedon, taking over from original director Zack Snyder. He revealed that he wasn’t part of the revamped production whatsoever and never even met with Whedon. Despite this, he firmly believes that the former Marvel director is following Snyder’s vision of the film. “I think he’s really committed to finishing the story that Zack was telling,” Simmons said.
Finally, he mentions how he’s “excited” to work with Ben Affleck in future DCEU movies. In particular, he wants to further explore the dynamic of Batman and Gordon both being mature, long-in-the-tooth protectors of Gotham City. “We[‘ll] get into some interesting stories about these weathered guys,” he explained.
Whatever the size of his role, it should be fun to see Gordon rub shoulders with DC’s finest when Justice League arrives on November 17th.
