Around a decade ago, Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller was set to take the helm of an animated Justice League movie along the lines of The Polar Express (using similar mo-cap technology). A number of actors were cast (including rumoured DCEU actor Armie Hammer as Batman), and Common looked set to play the Green Lantern, John Stewart.
Despite making a brief appearance last year in Suicide Squad as Monster T, the rapper/actor remains open to playing the character in the upcoming Green Lantern Corps. However, while the John Wick: Chapter 2 star wants it to happen, he was quick to point out that he hasn’t spoken to anyone at the studio yet about this becoming a reality:
“No, I haven’t spoken to DC. John Stewart, the character, is amazing. When I had the opportunity of potentially being John Stewart, when we were working, I learned how he was part of the Green Lantern Corps and all that he was doing. He was kind of community-driven so I felt like, ‘Oh, man, I love this character. He used his mind to do a lot of things so I connected with him. I just love the character, but I don’t know, I haven’t talked to DC about it but, you know, hey! Yeah, I would love [to]. That would be an honor to play John Stewart.”
A shortlist of actors being eyed for the role of Hal Jordan in Green Lantern Corps was recently revealed, but there’s been no word yet on who will play John Stewart. Unfortunately, it’s hard to imagine Common being cast after already appearing in this world, even if it was as a minor character, and chances are that Warner Bros. will choose someone younger.
After all, it would make sense for Hal to serve as a mentor of sorts to John, and as Common is 44, he’s a little too old even to play the current comic book version of the hero. There’s a slim chance we’ll get some official Green Lantern Corps casting news in 2017, but with the script only just now going into development, it may be best not to get our hopes up.
Regardless, as soon as we hear more we’ll be sure to let you know.
