Despite being two films in with the main series and a few spinoffs floating around as well, Warner Bros. continues to push full steam ahead with The Conjuring franchise, and why wouldn’t they? The original was one of the finest horror movies we’ve seen in years and its sequel was just as impressive, grossing even more at the box office and earning equally positive reviews. As such, it’s really no surprise that we’re going to be seeing much more of this world in the years to come.
Already headed down the pipeline are The Nun and Annabelle: Creation, two spinoffs which are expected to be big hits for the studio, but could there be more where those came from? It appears that yes, there just might be. Talking to Arrow in the Head during a recent set visit, producer Peter Safran – who just yesterday brought us some intriguing details on The Conjuring 3 – said that one more character from the franchise might be up for his own solo outing: the Crooked Man.
Appearing in The Conjuring 2, the controversial figure wasn’t a hit with everyone, but according to Safran, they’re got some interesting ideas for where they can take him should a spinoff materialize.
“I think there’s something fascinating in the Crooked Man. Maybe tonally he’s not as grounded as the Conjuring itself is and maybe that’s why some people felt it wasn’t what they were looking for in the Conjuring but I suspect a movie with him would be really really cool,” said the producer.
“I love the character, just things like the transformation from the dog into the Crooked Man and the way he walked. I just love what that character can be. We have some interesting ideas for him. So we’ll see.”
As someone who was a fan of this particular character, I’d definitely be on board with him getting his own spinoff somewhere down the road. However, given that not everyone was into the Crooked Man, and that the franchise is already stretching itself a bit thin at the moment with everything it’s got going on, it may be best to hold off. For now, at least.
Honestly, I think most people would be more interested in seeing The Conjuring 3 before another new spinoff, and even though it hasn’t been officially announced just yet, you’ve got to imagine that it’s in the works. The first two entries were far too profitable and critically acclaimed for it not to be. Either way, it’s clear that the franchise has a lot of gas left in the tank and for fans of these characters and horror in general, that can only be a good thing.
